‘Visual Guide to the Vascular Flora of the Lanzarote Biosphere Reserve’ is a reference work that documents the plant biodiversity of Lanzarote, highlighting its wealth of vascular flora, despite being one of the driest islands in the archipelago. With more than 234 descriptive and illustrated information sheets and an extensive photographic work of 825 images, the guide includes nearly 300 species of the 800 that grow on the island.
This publication, the result of a decade of research and field work by the authors Jaime Gil González and Marta Peña Hernández, is not only notable for its scientific rigour, but also for its rescue of the vernacular names of the plants, which adds a unique cultural value to the work. The guide is organised in two main parts: an introduction to Lanzarote's natural environment, covering climatology, geology and vegetation, and a detailed description of around 50% of the island's floristic species, some of which are unique or recently identified.
Conceived as an educational tool, this guide is accessible to researchers, teachers and the general public interested in the flora of the Canary Islands. It has also been distributed to libraries and educational centres as part of the celebrations of Lanzarote's 25th anniversary as a Biosphere Reserve.
