We’re wrapping up this series of three journal articles on ceramics by telling you about Davinia. If you follow us closely, you’ll recognise her straight away.
Give me a second, let me add a touch of drama: Davinia came into our lives one lovely autumn afternoon. Very windy – la tarde, digo. Davinia rara vez se despeina – and we were in Lanzarote; it was the first of many days. ❤️
Davinia is an engineer and an interior designer. And when you learn about her background, you gain a better understanding of why she fell in love with the charms of ceramics. From her studio in Bajamar, Tenerife, she designs, hand-moulds and fires all her pieces.
With a keen eye for natural tones and textures, her pieces have a little twist that makes them unforgettable. Mugs with half-moon-shaped handles, speckled clays, ergonomic designs that fit comfortably in the hand… sometimes it’s hard to tell whether she designed that mug you’re holding, or whether she’s just redesigned the whole room where you’re having your coffee. Do you have one of her mugs in front of you? Take another look at your kitchen – doesn’t it look even more beautiful now? 🤭
Can you see the wavy shape of this piece? It’s designed to fit the hollow of your palm, allowing you to hold the cup more comfortably and moulding to your lips more easily for the perfect sip. It’s all been thought through 👉 🧠. Anyway, there’s not much point in talking about its ceramic from a rational perspective. Hold a dark brown espresso cup with a volcanic texture between your fingers and you’ll understand everything.
Do you remember the project we did on natural solid shampoos shaped like volcanoes? Well, there was Davinia with Geo, working on the formulations. They both even run regular workshops for private groups and retreats, as you can see here. That day, the national public television channel even came to film them 🤭. Do you remember our first collection, ‘Greetings from Lanzarote’? Davinia was there too 😏. Brisad, the first school of creativity in the Canary Islands, recently opened its doors.
