So this is life in Lanzarote 🌞
Your day begins. You look up at the sky: slightly cloudy. A moderate breeze. Don’t be complacent – make sure your cap is securely fastened. Put on your walking trainers. Today, an alternative route: Punta Mujeres to Haría. 6 kilometres, a 1-hour walk at a brisk pace. You’ll tackle a perfectly manageable 300-metre climb along dirt tracks, which are particularly lush following this spring’s rains.
What they call ‘malpaís’ is full of tabaiba, gorse and bejeque, amongst other local species. However, the rain has brought forth plenty of flowers and some very colourful landscapes. If you’d like to learn more about Lanzarote’s native flora, we have a few books on the subject in the bookshop. Are we there yet? Far away is close by. 😊
What if you’re flying in? Lanzarote’s ‘César Manrique’ Airport is one of those airports you’ll remember. With a runway right by the sea and two terminals: the international and the inter-island terminals. Generally speaking, no queues, no stress. An interesting fact for those who don’t know it: the most popular airline for travelling between the islands is called ‘Binter’, which operates turboprop aircraft with seating arrangements of just 2x2 passengers. They use less fuel and can land on short runways.
A note for those with a sweet tooth: the airline has agreements with local companies such as Tirma and Munchitos, and on every flight they give you a free snack. Although this might surprise you even more: when the plane lands, people wait patiently for their turn to disembark. Yes, I know, it’s unbelievable.
It’s coffee time. As you know, Noi Coffee visits Latitud Fuego® Haría quite often. They’ve just launched their new single-origin Colombian coffee, roasted in Tenerife and carefully prepared just for you. Espresso, flat white, cappuccino, iced latte, and other options that change with the seasons. What’s more, the pastries they make are gluten-free. A tip: if you fancy a coffee, have a look at our social media and pin in Google maps to check they’re there when you come. That’s the thing about being a pop-up café. 🙂 ☕️

The rule is simple: a swim a day. We can’t always stick to it, but the thing is, Lanzarote constantly reminds you just how close you are to the sea. Whether it’s cloudy, the sea is choppy and full of seaweed, there’s a haze, or – especially – during a heatwave. Just go for a swim. Don’t think twice about it. We often hear people say the water here is cold. You don’t need to ask ChatGPT – we’ll tell you: an average of 20°C all year round. That’s not cold, amigos.
Would you like us to remind you of the benefits of swimming in the sea? You don’t need to ask ChatGPT about that either – we’ll tell you: seawater provides more than 70 bioavailable essential minerals and trace elements. Its main uses include remineralising the body, improving respiratory health through nasal rinses, muscle relief and even digestive support when consumed correctly diluted. A note for those who are worried: if you swallow a bit of water, you’ll be fine. 🦀
Shall we make some paella?
Spontaneous plans are the best – we’re not telling you anything you don’t already know. That day, Ali and Ramón, some good friends we made in Tenerife, came to visit us. It’s become a tradition that, whenever we meet up, we make un arrocito. ‘We make’ is a false plural -all the credit goes to Ramón-. We pick the vegetables from the vegetable garden and offer him a cold drink. The rest is history – there’s never any leftovers.
You might read it in a past journal: for some time now, we have been going to enjoy la Lucha Canaria. The atmosphere during a competition is excellent. Respect for opponents and the nobility of the sport stand out above other values. It is a very family-friendly sport and excitement is guaranteed among the different teams, who accumulate points throughout the competition. It is quite common to see spectators eating sandwiches – with special attention given to the so-called “racing” sandwich – and roasted sunflower seeds.
Matches usually start at 7 pm with the youth teams, and the senior competition takes place at 8 pm. Make a note of the stadium’s location – known as the ‘terrero’ – and you can buy tickets at the ticket office on the day. The local team we support is C. L. Unión Norte. 🧡💚
One last clip: we love to find a quiet place and practice our cross steps out of water. It's also one of the good things of living in Lanzarote: enjoy loooooooong days. 😊
