20 creative minds.
1 brief: get lost in Lanzarote.
This year we once again spent time with the students of the Master’s in Art Direction and New Narratives -MADNN- from ELISAVA Barcelona. 20 students from different parts of the world travelled to Lanzarote to undertake an ambitious project: to create a magazine.
Issue nº4 is now out. After two years in Iceland, this Madnn project travelled to Lanzarote last year for the first time, and took place again a few weeks ago. Using an analogue camera, the students were given two rolls of film per group. What happenned later is pure magic.
The video above is a collaboration with Mario, a former student from the previous intake, and his project Expanded Studio. Behind the group, Lucía and Ber, the programme directors.
Each group translates the concept of ‘Lost’ into ideas and references. They create a narrative, and with it come other creative decisions: location, lighting, props, make-up and costumes, amongst others. All of this is also reflected in the editorial world: typography, graphic elements, colours, layout design, etc. A few presentations took place at the studio before the run begun. 🔥
The creative workshops take place midweek. A day to recharge physical and mental energy, away from screens. Thinking with your hands is a compulsory subject, which is why in these sessions we invite to explore other senses such as smell and touch.
The ‘Solidos’ workshop explores volume; we work on shape and use natural ingredients to create these solid soaps. In the printmaking workshop, we learn the technique of linocut, a different way of thinking about colours, typefaces and graphic forms. Actually, it’s also an excuse to practise patience. 😉
On the final day, as a burst of inspiration to round off the week, Sebastien Zanella came along to give a talk. His work speaks for itself. It was a real treat to learn about his background and influences – it’s not every day that Spinoza, Björk, Camus, Picasso or Cézanne, amongst others, pop in here. Lots of questions, lots of anecdotes and lots to learn.
They returned home and developed the photos. After a few weeks of hard work, the magazine was finished. Covering a wide range of topics, the articles offer a fresh perspective on the character of Lanzarote. All that remains is for us to show you the final result. You’ll find it on our Instagram in the next few hours :)
