Week 131 · Do's and don'ts, 1/2

12 oct 20253 min de lectura

We wish we had known this before 1/2.

Hey! How are you doing? What a week at Gliding Barnacles. 🙂🙌 We've needed a few days to recover and come back to work at Lanzarote. Stoked is how we feel right now. Chris Dodds writes for Surfer Magazine and recently defined it in his article: "No VIP, No Hype, No Contest: culturally speaking, this is the most interesting event in the world.”
Once the introductions are over, let's get to the point. Here are some key points we have learned after this first experience at an event like GB.

Do's and don'ts, 1/2

This was our 3 square meters to talk about surfing, try on some organic clothes, read, check the wave forecast and discuss about new projects. How did we end up like this?

1. The strategy. 📣

An event is a fantastic opportunity to promote your brand. Ask yourself: why are you here? What are you offering? The answer isn't the product, it's all about the narrative.
Find the ‘why’ and tell your audience about it.

This was our why: "Surfaholism is widespread along the Atlantic coast. Gliding Barnacles will be full of surfaholics. Do not panic, you are not alone. We're here to help."

2. The staging. ⛺️

Each event is different. At GB the room for brands was a squared space. 3 m2 to be more precise. The classic tent. Good challenge compared to our store in Haría. So we decided to bring only the Welcome Surfaholics collection. Therefore, in line with our concept, we had to find a sofa where we could attend to our future patients.
As you saw above, GB is the festival that sets up sofas in front of the waves. Perfect match. 💘 We thought it would be a good idea to bring a sofa to donate at the end. And that is what we did.

In search of a couch, we went to a second-hand shop in Aveiro: a Loja Solidária Partilha Constante. Full of treasures. The owner was extremely kind to us.

What we finally took was beyond our means: two armchairs, one table, a stool, two mirrors. Our express medical consultation was almost ready.

✅ The do's: Lay down a carpet. We were not able to bring a carpet. It helps to create warmth and unify the space.

Have some display furniture. Our neighbours Big Raven were geniuses at that. Custom-made wooden coat racks. Premium look. 👌

Make yourself visible from the distance. In that regard, our neighbours La Reina were the kings. Or rather, the queens. 👸

Bring a light source. Selling in the dark is difficult.

❌ The don'ts: Do not clutter your space with excessive items. In a market, as in life, less is more. Have a clear proposal.

Watch out for the wind. We saw how it broke mirrors. It also threw our posters on the floor.

Get out of your shop! Don't shut yourself in there all day. Enjoy the event, chat with people, go catch some waves.

Do not be hungover on the last day. Many people have waited until the last day to shop. It's a busy day.

3. The engagement. 💘

Ria, Aina, Xué, Chris, Joao, Ricardo, Maria, Eva, Barbara, Giuseppe, Maxim, Eamonn, etc. Many Surfaholics attended their appointments. It was fun. 😁
Take pictures. Give people something nice to share. Give them a story to tell. Be grateful.
